A Little Bit of Honesty

So. Howdy. How are you all doing?

It’s been quite a while. I’ll be honest, I’ve been having a hard time writing this blog post. I’ve kind of been avoiding it, and I’m not sure why. At first it was because I was intent on doing a bunch of research on the comics I wanted to talk about, and then it devolved into some awful anxiety spirals and the usual I’m-not-good-enough sort of thing, and then I just avoided it altogether.

I think I have a fear of success, which stems from a deeper fear of failure. It’s like, I want to do something awesome because I want the accolade that affirms I’m “good enough”, but then if that happens I somehow have to figure out how to keep that going…and what if I can’t do that? It’s a slippery anxiety slope, and it sucks, but now that I’m aware of it maybe I can fight it off more often.

I was also getting too wrapped up in being “professional” (whatever that means) and trying to be super polished with my posts. I wanted them to be informative and academic, but that’s not who I am, really. I’m a messy person. I’m very emotionally-driven and passionate about things, and I have very little patience for academic writing. I’ve decided that in order to write consistently for this blog, I need to write how I feel instead of whatever it is I’ve been doing.

In the meantime, I’ve been working on editing “Chamomile Lavender”, the short, cute romance story I’m writing and illustrating, I’ve been working on a freelance art job designing a poster for a stage production of “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” which has been a TON of fun, and I’ve been working on putting an Etsy shop together. I haven’t been sitting idly by, I promise!

As to the blog’s theme this year, works that have inspired me and Aiden, I’ve got a lineup of comics I’ll be talking about. I do kind of want to go chronologically, but when it comes to webcomics it’ll get a little fuzzy. I can’t exactly recall which webcomic was my very first or how I began reading webcomics in the first place. Ah well. I’ve got plenty of comics to write about, and I’m excited to share them with you all! You’ll have to let me know if you’ve read the same ones and what your thoughts are – and if you haven’t read them, I can assure you I recommend them highly!

Thank you for your patience with me, it’s been a weird handful of weeks on my end. I hope you all are doing well!

P.s. What are some of the comics, print or web-based, that you read? What were some of your first comics that you experienced?
